Labour  Announces December 1st Strike Over Minimum Wage in Kaduna

The Kaduna State Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has strongly condemned the Kaduna State Government for failing to implement the ₦72,000 minimum wage announced by the governor.

The Union has set Sunday, December 1, 2024, as the date to start a strike until the governor implements the new wage.

Comrade Gado Hussaini Titus, State Secretary, disclosed this in a statement obtained by Premium Times in Kaduna.

According to the union, this action highlights a blatant failure to adopt the negotiated consequential adjustments in the payment of the November salary.

The Union further stated that such conduct by the government undermines the welfare of workers and constitutes a serious breach of public trust.

“NLC strongly condemns the Kaduna State Government for its failure to implement the ₦72,000 minimum wage as announced by the governor. Instead of fulfilling this promise, the government has resorted to an arbitrary and insulting increment for workers.

“The Kaduna State Council of the NLC views this paltry increment as an affront to the dignity of labour. It is unacceptable for a government to make lofty public promises only to renege on its commitments through half-hearted measures that fail to meet even the most basic needs of workers.

“To this end, the Council demands the immediate implementation of the negotiated consequential adjustments and the signing of a memorandum of understanding. Anything less would constitute a betrayal of the hardworking workforce of the State.

“It should be noted that the State Executive Council (SEC), during its meeting on Tuesday, November 27, 2024, expressed total commitment to complying with the directive of the National Executive Council, which mandated a strike action should any state government fail to fully implement the new minimum wage by November 30, 2024. For us, Sunday, December 1, 2024, is sacrosanct, especially in light of this obvious charade,”
