The Kaduna State Bureau of Interfaith, in collaboration with International Alert, is organizing a vital regional conference to address climate change-induced conflicts in Northern Nigeria.
This announcement was made by Barrister Tahir Umar Tahir, Director General of the Bureau of Interfaith, in a statement on Sunday. The conference is scheduled for November 4th to 6th, 2024, and will also serve as the inaugural meeting of Northern Nigerian Heads of Religious Agencies.
Tahir emphasized that this event reflects the inclusive vision of Governor Uba Sani and is the first of its kind in the country. Notable attendees will include His Eminence, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, and the CAN National President, His Eminence Most Reverend Dr. D. C. Okoh, along with various religious and civil society organizations.
The conference aims to convene key stakeholders from 19 Northern states, including government officials, traditional and religious leaders, academics, civil society organizations, and international experts, to discuss strategies for mitigating the impact of climate change on peace and security in the region.
Key discussion topics will include “Climate Security and the Future of Peace in Northern Nigeria,” presented by Professor Bulus A. Sawa, and “Government, Traditional and Religious Leadership, Promotion of Peace and Prevention of Violent Extremism,” presented by Professor Auwal Faruq Abdussalam.
Tahir stated that the conference aims to foster dialogue, share knowledge, and develop actionable strategies to address the complex challenges posed by climate change-related conflicts. By engaging religious leaders and government agencies, the conference seeks to explore innovative approaches to promoting peace, preventing violent extremism, and ensuring the safety and well-being of communities.
At the conclusion of the conference, a communiqué will be issued outlining key recommendations and action points aimed at mitigating the effects of climate change and promoting sustainable peace in the region.
