In Sabon Birnin village, Igabi Local Government Area, locals are accusing soldiers of killing more than 100 cows during a market event on Sunday afternoon.

The incident took place at the community’s weekly cattle market, where two individuals were also reported dead as traders scrambled for safety when soldiers reportedly opened fire on the livestock.

A video circulating online shows the deceased animals scattered across the market, with three bodies visible, as villagers look on in distress.

Shehu Sabon Birnin, a resident, stated that some soldiers involved were on motorcycles and expressed frustration over the uncollected carcasses, which are now causing a foul smell in the area.

“It was a chaotic scene when soldiers arrived, some on motorcycles, and began shooting at the cows, resulting in two fatalities. The over 100 dead animals remain at the market, and the nearby houses are now affected by the stench. We are still unclear about the motive behind this action,” he said.

Dr. Ahmad Gumi shared the video on his verified Facebook page, commenting, “Banditry has a cause. And this is part of it. Two wrongs don’t make a right, especially when committed by those entrusted with maintaining order.”

There has been no official response from the state government or the 1 Mechanized Division of the Nigerian Army. Lieutenant Colonel Musa Yahaya, Deputy Director of Public Relations, did not return calls for comment.
