The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), in partnership with the Kaduna State Universal Basic Education Board (KAD-SUBEB), has enrolled more than 1,000 out-of-school children from the remote Farar Kasa community in Soba Local Government Area.
As part of the initiative, a new primary school will be established, and an adult education program will be introduced for those beyond the typical school age.
Dr. Gerida Birukila, UNICEF Chief of Field Office in Kaduna, highlighted the challenges faced by the community due to the 12-kilometer distance from the nearest primary school. She noted that this distance has significantly impeded access to education for local children.

“This community is isolated and underserved in terms of health, education, and other services. The establishment of a local school will greatly reduce the number of out-of-school children in Kaduna State,” Dr. Birukila stated.
She urged the community to support the school project and ensure children’s regular attendance. Additionally, she promised the installation of a potable borehole and the establishment of a medical facility, along with adult education programs for locals.
Alhaji Tijjani Abdullahi, Chairman of SUBEB, praised UNICEF for its ongoing support in education and healthcare. He mentioned that SUBEB is working on its 2023/2024 projects with the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) and plans to start building the school’s permanent structure in January 2025.
Abdullahi also noted that over 2,000 schools have been constructed in the past four years, with additional classrooms planned for the community using UBEC funds for 2024.
Hon. Abdulmumini Bawa Gamagira, Chairman of Soba Local Government Area, expressed gratitude to UNICEF and SUBEB, emphasizing the crucial role of education in development. He highlighted that addressing illiteracy could resolve many of Nigeria’s issues, including insecurity.
The Village Head of Farar Kasa, Alhaji Habeeb Suleiman, welcomed the new school project, noting that access to education has been limited, especially during the rainy season, due to the long distance to the nearest school In Kusallo.
