A tragic incident unfolded along the Daura-Kano Road in Jigawa State, where a customs officer lost his life in the line of duty while pursuing a suspected smuggler, according to the Nigeria Customs Service, Federal Operations Unit, Zone B.
Inspector of Customs (IC) Hamza Abdullahi Elenwo, identified as the fallen officer, was struck by a vehicle suspected to have been smuggled into the country.
Superintendent Isah Sulaiman, Public Relations Officer of FOU Zone B, expressed profound sadness over the incident, which occurred on Friday, 12 July 2024.
In an official statement, Sulaiman conveyed the heartfelt condolences of Comptroller Ahmadu Shuaibu, Head of Federal Operations Unit Zone B, to Inspector Hamza’s family. He also highlighted the arrest of one suspect, currently in custody at the Nigeria Police Force, Gwiwa Division in Jigawa State, ensuring justice for the fallen officer.
Comptroller Shuaibu condemned the reckless actions of smugglers who endanger lives to evade capture, reaffirming the unit’s steadfast commitment to combating smuggling activities.
Inspector Hamza, originally from Port Harcourt, Rivers State, began his service with the Nigeria Customs Service as Customs Assistant III (CAIII) in the Transport and Logistics Unit in 2013. He achieved the rank of Inspector of Customs (IC) in 2022 and leaves behind a wife and two children.
