The Project Manager of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGP 1) Transforming Nigeria’s Vegetable Markets Project, East West Seed Foundation, Usman Barau said a total of 170,211 smallholder vegetables farmers benefited through practical demonstration training on sustainable farming practices in Kaduna and Kano States.
According to him, the SDGP 1 project was co-founded by the Netherlands, Wagenimgen University and Research, Solidaridad and other partners.
He explained that the target outreach of the project was 136, ,200 farmers but they were able to supercedes the target by 34,011.
The Project manager disclosed this at the closing ceremony of the project theme Transforming Nigeria’s Vegetable Markets held in collaboration with the Kaduna State Agricultural Development Agency KADA and other international partners held in Kaduna.
According to him, the SDGP1 aims at promoting healthier competitive input markets in Kaduna and Kano States by introducing new verieties , technologies and knowledge to address challenges such as low productivity, limited variety and technological gaps among small holders farmers
Earlier the Emir of Zazzau, Ambassador Ahmad Nuhu Bamalli said there is a huge market for vegetable farming in the country; therefore, women can take the advantage.
According to him, It’s something that people can do especially women at the lower level without bothering to look for white-collar jobs.
Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State, represented by Deputy Hadiza Balarabe, described the project as a timely intervention in transforming the vegetable farmers in the state.
He further commended the organizers for their support towards enhancing vegetable farming in the state which was in line with his administration rural transformation agenda
