Villagers are fleeing as bandits and Ansaru militants clash in Kaduna

Villagers from  Old Kuyello village, under Birnin Gwari Local Government Area of Kaduna State are fleeing their houses  following a clash between bandits and Ansaru militants groups a few days ago in the area.

It was gathered that villagers from the village  are fleeing as bandits took over the community on Sunday around 3:00 pm.

Local sources told Ruralpost that about five days ago, the bandits ambushed Ansaru militants operating in Old Kuyello and killed about five of their members.

This incident forced the Ansaru militants to retreat into the forest, giving the bandits the opportunity to invade the village and cart away foodstuffs belonging to the villagers.

Hadi Kuyello, a resident of the area and a community leader, confirmed the incident, stating that many bandits were also killed during the gunfight with the Ansaru militants in the forest.

“As we speak, men, women and children are fleeing to safer villages because the bandits have invaded the Old Kuyello village, carting away foodstuff,” he said.

According to him, the fleeing villagers, especially women and children, are being conveyed on motorcycles, while men are escaping through the nearby bushes.

Ishaq Usman Kasai, the Chairman of Birnin Gwari Emirate Progressive Union (BEPU), confirmed the incident, saying villagers are leaving their homes in numbers for safer communities to safeguard their lives.

There were no official statements from the state government and the Police Command authorities. The Command Public Relations Officer, ASP Mansir Hassan, couldn’t be reached by phone and is yet to reply to a text message seeking clarification on the issue.
